Faith-based recovery support services are various houses of worship that integrate their religious beliefs and/or varying forms of spirituality into addiction recovery.

The heightened awareness of substance use disorders has led to an increasing number of support services provided by different faith-based communities, such as:

 

  • Sponsorship opportunities
  • Development of recovery-friendly churches
  • Integration of ‘recovery pastors’
  • Facilitation of recovery support groups

 


While increasing in number, more research is needed to identify the relative effectiveness of these religious-based interventions in facilitating long-term recovery and preventing relapse.
